When we think of fall, two major ingredients come to mind: apples and pumpkins. These apples tend to be sweeter, with only a slight hint of acidity, like Red Delicious, Royal Gala, Russet, Lady William, Empire, and Fuji.
For Cooking:
Apples used for cooking need to be quite sour and break up easily when they are cooked, like Grenadiers and Newton Wonders.
For Eating and Cooking:
These varieties are good for both! You will need to check your recipe, as specific apples are sometimes called for. Common dual-purpose apples include Granny Smith, Pink Lady, Jonagold, Jonathan, and Golden Delicious.
